Is there outward evidence of your Christian faith? Or is faith a private matter kept quietly between you and God? Whether quiet or not, the Apostle James asks, “What good is it . . . if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?” (Jas. 2:14). Of course, James is not disparaging faith by asking, “What good is it?” Rather, his rhetorical intention is to connect the dots between faith and the practical outflow of it, that is, works. In other words, “faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (2:17). James’s argument does not deny that we are justified as righteous through faith alone in Christ alone. Rather, faith alone is never alone. It proves itself true through fruit. No fruit, no faith.

The Sovereign Love of God
It is difficult then to fathom the love of God for us individually and personally before creation, before we were, before anyone was. But he did: God the Father “chose us in [God the Son] before the foundation of the world…In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will” (Eph. 1:4-5). Before “In the beginning” (Gen. 1:1), in love for “those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Rom. 8:29). He really did love us first.
The Necessity of Grace
As John Stott taught his study assistant, when we get our theology of grace right, then we see the necessity of grace in all things, which leads us to worship, whether it be the thin end of a cup of coffee or the wide end of the resurrection of Christ from the dead.
